Calculation of rated current of transformer

 

The rated current of a single phase transformer is calculated using the formula I=S/U, where S represents the rated capacity (kVA) and U denotes the rated voltage (kV). For instance, the TR D1-15-13800-120/240V transformer has a low-voltage rated current of 15/0.24 ≈ 62.5A and a high-voltage rated current of 15/13.8 ≈ 1.09A. During calculation, the voltage level must be specified to ensure unit consistency.

Copper rods are the core components for transformer conductivity, featuring excellent electrical conductivity to ensure the safe operation of transformers. The selection of copper rods must consider both purity and specifications: oxygen-free copper rods with a purity of ≥ 99.95% are preferred, as they offer high conductivity (≥ 100% IACS) and reduce transmission losses.

 

Current matching follows the principle of "current-carrying capacity adaptation": the long-term allowable current-carrying capacity of the copper rod should be ≥ 1.1 times the rated current of the transformer. For example, a 15KVA single phase transformer with a rated current of 62.5A requires a copper rod with a current-carrying capacity of ≥ 70A.

 

 The current-carrying capacity of 1 square millimeter copper is approximately 5A. Despite copper's excellent conductivity, overheating can accelerate insulation aging. Therefore, a margin of at least 1.2 times must be reserved when selecting copper rods to ensure safety. For example, if the low-voltage rated current of a 15KVA single phase transformer is 62.5A, a copper rod of 16.8 square millimeters should be selected.
